Sinks and taps
Sinks, taps and waste disposal
The busiest square metre in the kitchen. We supply the sink, the tap and the disposal unit, and our own plumbers fit the lot.
Sinks
Four materials, four different jobs
Inset, undermounted or flush fitted, depending on the worktop you are putting it into.
-
Fireclay
The heavy glazed farmhouse sink. Deep, hard wearing and warm to look at. It needs a base unit built to carry the weight of it.
-
Ceramic
A glazed finish that wipes clean and suits a traditional kitchen. Tough, though a dropped pan can chip the glaze.
-
Stainless steel
Light, hard to damage and the easiest to live with. Available in several gauges and finishes, including brushed and textured.
-
Composite
Granite or quartz mixed with resin. Quiet under running water, resistant to heat and scratches, and made in colours that match a worktop.
Taps
Mixer taps and boiling water taps
A mixer tap is the straightforward choice, and the things to check are water pressure and how high the spout sits over the bowl. A boiling water tap does more: instant boiling water for cooking and drinks, filtered cold, and on some models chilled or sparkling as well. It needs a tank under the sink, a socket and room in the cupboard.
- Check your water pressure first, high and low pressure taps are not the same
- Spout height and reach decide whether a roasting tin fits underneath
- A pull-out spray earns its keep if you rinse a lot or fill pans at the sink
- Boiling taps need a tank, a socket and access for servicing
- A boiling tap replaces the kettle, which gives you back worktop space
Waste disposal
Waste disposal units
A disposal unit fits under the sink and grinds food waste so it goes down the drain instead of into a caddy. It needs a sink with the right size waste hole, a socket in the cupboard and a waste run that can take it.
Continuous feed units run while you feed waste in. Batch feed units only run with the cover in place, which is the safer choice in a house with young children. Tell us which sink you are looking at and we will confirm whether it can take one before you buy anything.
